Lecture 2 Flashcards
What are the 2 assumptions of scientific psychology
1) Behaviour is purposeful
2) Behaviour is understandable
What theory did Karl Popper contribute to scientific theories?
Empircal falsifiability
What are the 3 components of understanding in psychology?
Description, explanation and Control
What is the definition of Hypothesis?
A formally stated expectation about behaviour, defining purpose and goals of a study
What are the 4 types of hypothesis
One tailed, two tailed, causal and descriptive.
What 4 things must a hypothesis be?
precise (defining all terms), falsifiable (there is a chance that the test can show the hyps is false), Rational (possibly true given current knowledge) and Parsimonious (as simple as possible)
What are the 2 sources of hypothesis?
Exisiting research, Observations
What is the defintion of a theory?
Logically organised set of proposals that defines, explains and organises our knowledge about (many) significant aspects/ parts of behaviour
What are the 6 stages of testing hypothesis through research
- Form hypothesis
- Design study
- Make predictions
- Conduct study
- Confirm/ reject hypothesis
- Modify theory if neccesary
What are the criteria for scientific evidence?
Objevtive, empirical, systematic and controlled
What is the definition of condition?
a specific amount or quality of the IV that is applied to subjects
What are the 2 types of IV
Participant variables (naturally occuring differences) or experimentor variables (manipulated by researcher0
Define “condition”
a specific amount or quality of the IV that is applied to subjects
Define extraneous variables
variables that potentially influence results but aren’t of direct interest
