• Disconnecting
• Disguising work activities
HOW DOES PROXIMITY MATTER?
• Social facilitation effect • Social pressure • Mere exposure effect: - Better performance (of easy tasks) - Higher involvement - Liking and group identity - Induced cooperation - Conformity

Privacy: extent to which you can control boundaries of conversation
The physical requirements of private informal interaction: spaces with visibility and acoustics in mind
Balance Privacy with Proximity (too much proximity reduces privacy and v.v.)
Alcove: ideal space for private informal interaction
What is propinquity?
Propinquity: ‘proximity’ when spaces bring people physically closer to each other
- Social proximity: close to the workspaces of other people
- Functional proximity: close access to shared resources such as entrances, restrooms, stairwells, elevators, photocopiers, coffee machines, and the water cooler.
What is social designation?
Social designation: (or ‘permission’) feeling legitimate to go there and feel accepted to stop talking when you want to
What is proximity?
Proximity refers to the physical distance between people measured in units such as meters.
What are affordances?
Action possibilities and opportunities that emerge from actors engaging with a technology. The properties and qualities of technologies are common but you cannot predict how technologies will be used due to its affordances
