Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is Cross-sectional Research Approach?
Different age groups (cohorts) are compared at one point in time
What is Longitudinal Research Approach?
Researching the same people repeatedly over time
What is Sequential Research Approach?
Different age groups are tested repeatedly over time
What are the four stages of Piaget’s development theory?
- Sensorimotor Period
- Preoperational Period
- Concrete Operational Period
- Formal Operational Period
What is the Sensorimotor stage?
Age 0 - 2
Imitative ability develops (Face, gestures…)
Gradual development of the concept of object permanence
No mental representations (Only exists if able to perceive
What is the Preoperational Stage?
2 - 7 years
Operations - can mentally perform actions that before they could only do physically
Mental representations firmly developed
Egocentrism - Inability to differentiate between own perspective and another perspective
Animism - the belief that inanimate objects have lifelike properties
What is conservation?
A defining line between preoperational and operational thinking
Eg. One full cup being poured into a different shaped cup (Knowing that it is the same amount)
What is the Concrete Operational stage?
Age 7 - 11
Egocentrism wanes (Can see other perspectives)
Acquire mental operations to solve problems logically
Can apply their mental operations only to concrete examples
What is the Formal Operational Stage?
Age 12+
Emergence of abstract logical reasoning
Emergence of hypothetical-deductive problem solving
