What is the definition of safety?
Defined as freedom from injury, danger or risk.
What is the definition of health?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) health is defined as: “not merely the absence of disease but also a state of optimal mental, physical and social well bring. Health is therefore both the absence of disease plus the presence of “good” health”.
What’s the definition of welfare?
Involves the provision and use of facilities.
What is the aim of the safety, health and welfare at work act 2005?
The safety, health and welfare at work act, 2005 takes a preventative approach to reducing accidents and ill health at work.
The 2005 SHAWW act states that “every employer shall….ensure, so far as is reasonably practical, the safety, health and welfare at work of his or her employees”
What are the eight roles of HSA?
- Promoting good standards of health and safety at work.
- Inspecting all places of work.
- Monitoring compliance with health and safety laws.
- Investigating serious accidents, causes of ill health and complaints.

A health and safety inspector can call on the place of work unannounced.

What are the implications of breaking the SHAWW act?
Publication of names and addresses.
District court 300 euro per charge and or prison term of 6 months - 2 years.
Circuit court prison term up to 2 years.
Maximum fine of up to 3 million euro.
On the spot fines up to 1000 euro.
What are the first 3 of the 15 duties of the SHAWW act? - employer duties.
- Manage the health and safety in the workplace.
- Design, provide and maintain a safe place of work which uses plant and equipment.
- Plan, organize, maintain and revise the revise the safe systems of work- safety statement.
What are the next 5 duties?
- Bring safety statements to employees attention on commencement of employment and annually.
- Have safety statement, or relevant extract, available in every workplace.
- Prevent improper conduct and behavior in the workplace.
- Train employees on transfer or change of task.
- Inform employment agencies of the skills required and thr specific features of the job.
What are the duties 9-11?
- Prevent risks to employees from thr use of any substances and articles.
- Provide protection against noise, vibration and radiation.
- Design, provide and maintain safe access and egress.
What are the duties 12-15?
12.Appoint one or more competent persons.
13. Provide competent persons with information on the factors that affect health and safety.
14. Undertake health surveillance appropriate to the risks identified.
15. Inform employees of emergencies and series, imminent dangers.
Instruct employees to stop work and/or leave the place of work and proceed to a safe place.
Review risk assessments and safety statements when’re there has been a significant change.
Competent persons 2005 SHAWW act?
The act states that a person is competent “where, having regard to the task he/she is required to preform… posses sufficient training, experience and knowledge”.
Safety representative act?
Act on behalf of employees to help ensure a safe and healthy workplace.
What is a safety representative?
They are elected by the employees to represent them on matters of safety, health and welfare
What is a safety officer?
It is good practice to appoint a safety officer.
Mpg a legal requirement.
The safety officer is appointed Ted by the employer to advise on health and safety requirements
Assist with compliance with the safety, health and welfare act 2005.
