Lecture 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Daltons Atomic Theory (4 postulates)

A

1.) Each element is composed of extremely small particles
2.) all atoms of a given element are identical (not exactly true because of isotopes) but the atoms of one element are different from the atoms of another element
3.) atoms of one element cannot be changed into atoms of a different element by chemical reactions (atoms are neither created nor destroyed in chemical reactions
4.) compounds are formed when atoms of more than one element combine a, given compound always have the same relative number and kind of atom

Q

What is the Law of Constant Composition?

A

Compounds have a definite composition. That means that the relative number of atoms of each element in the compound is the same in any sample. (Substance that have the same ratio of elements

Q

What is the Law of Multiple Proportions?

A

When two or more compounds exist from the same elements, they cannot have the same relative number of atoms. (Substance with same elements in different ratios)
