lecture 2 Flashcards
4 goals of sex research
basic knowledge
understand sexual behaviour
inform public policies
inform personal decisions/opinions
a big challenge for generalization in sex research
often relies on volunteers, creating a selection bias
3 ethical principles in research
protection from harm (including cost-benefit analyses)
informed consent
debriefing
ethical violations in the Tuskegee study
coercive incentive; biased sample selection; violation of human rights
issues with self-report
intentionally provide false information; faulty memory and unprecise ability to make estimates; differences in question interpretation (like defining sex).
explain the rates of youth sexual activity from today and previously
rates were higher in the 80s than today, contrary to general public thoughts
trend in teen pregnancy
continuously lowering from 2014 to 2019
Limitations of qualitative research
inability to have a large number of participants; hard to have a representative sample
Advantages of qualitative research
rich data, allowing to draw a more complex picture to describe the human experience
advantages of direct observation
direct observation of sexual arousal; gets around social desirability.
limitations of direct observation
physiological response and behavior can change because you’re being observed. Harder to get people to participate in study.
