Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is dark matter?
It is not like normal matter and it is not detectable. It could be formed from axions or WIMPS.
What is baryonic matter?
Normal matter- protons, neutrons etc.
What is dark energy?
Accounts for most of the universe’s makeup and is theorised to be the reason for the universe’s expansion.
What is the current model of the evolution of the universe?
The accelerating universe model
How did dark matter evolve in the universe?
Denser regions collapsed under gravity (dominated by dark matter).
How do stars evolve?
Stars form in the densest regions from clouds of dust gas molecules. After their death, their elements are recycled into the interstellar medium.
What are the 6 different motions?
- The rotation of the Earth
- The Earth orbiting the sun
- The sun moving with respect to the local stars
- Our motion around the galaxy
- The motion of the Milky Way in the Local Group
- The Local Group moving towards the Virgo Cluster
