Lecture 17 Flashcards
What are the key ideas of special relativity?
- the speed of light is constant for everyone
- the laws of nature are the same for everyone
What is special relativity used to compare?
The motion of one object relative to another when they are both moving at constant velocity
What is a frame of reference and what are the two types?
A reference frame is a fictitious world that moves with that person (the observer)
1. inertial: moving at a constant velocity
2. accelerated: accelerating or in a gravitational field
Why can’t we reach the speed of light (according to what you see)?
All observers must see light travelling at c, hence you must be moving more slowly and cannot reach the speed of light
What are the consequences of approaching the speed of light?
- fast clocks tick more slowly
- simultaneity is relative
- the shape of fast objects change
- the mass of fast objects increases
*What is the time dilation formula?
t’= t /γ
*What is the Lorentz factor formula?
γ= 1/sqrt(1-(v^2/c^2))
*What is the length contraction formula?
l’= lγ
*What is the mass increase formula?
m’= mγ
What are the three effects seen as you approach the speed of light?
- Aberration: distortion of shapes
- Doppler effect: wavelengths are blueshifted moving towards the source
- Enhanced intensity of the source
