Lecture 2 Flashcards
What are autotrophs?
Organisms that use energy from the sun to convert water and CO2 from the air into glucose - Photosynthesis
What are heterotrophs?
The depend on autotrophs in order to survive
What does homeostasis mean?
Similar stability
homeo = similar
stasis - stability
What is evolution?
a change in the heritable characteristics from generation to generation
What is an organelle?
a small structure that is surrounded by a membrane and has a specific function
What does the cell membrane do?
it separates the living cell from its non-living surroundings
What is a the plasma membrane made of?
It is a bilayer of lipids with inserted proteins.
Hydrophobic - not soluble in water
What is a fatty acid?
a carboxylic acid with long chain hydrocarbons
What is an amphipathic molecule?
a compound possessing two properties
What is hydrophilic?
water-loving or polar
What is lipophilic?
fat-loving or non-polar
What are the levelos of protein organization?
Primary Structure
Secondary Structure
Tertiary structure
Quarternary Structure
