Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is the central dogma?
The one way flow of information form nucleus to ribosomes where RNA is translated into protein.
What are the main four structures proteins can take?
Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary
What is stabilisation?
Protein sequence folded into a certain structure so regions of chain may form bonds
What are the type of bonds involved?
Ionic bonding, disulfide bridge, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction
What is hydrolysis?
Water added to break bond
What is dehydration?
Removal of water for polymer formation
What do enzymes do?
Regulate metabolic pathways - Initiates reaction, speeds up reaction and ensures reaction and end product is always the same
How do cells make energy from food?
Using ATP made by the electron transport chain
