Lecture 19/01/2017 Flashcards
Density independent factors
a factor that has an effect on population (K) but has nothing to do with the population density (e.g., a severe weather event, fire, hurricane, volcanic eruption, etc.)
Density dependent factors
(e.g., spread of disease - more vectors, faster spread)
Competition between species - what happens when you squeeze species together by limiting habitat area (i.e., hab. frag.)
Have a greater influence on population size (K)
Population growth models (3):
Exponential (unlimited) Logistic (space-limited) - has nothing to do with being exponential or linear Monod growth (resource-limited) i.e., bacteria
The use of fertilizers has accounted for over ___% of the increase in crop production since 1940.
50%
What elements in fertilizers are causing eutrophication of lakes and water bodies?
N, P, (K)
