Lecture 17 Flashcards
Information transmitted
Somatic and Autonomic
Somatic
Voluntary muscle control and sensory information we are aware of
Autonomic
Involuntary muscle control and sensory information that we don’t know of
Somatic efferent division
Upper motor neuron and lower motor neuron
Upper motor neuron
Cell body in brain and axon in spinal cord
Lower motor neuron
Cell body in spinal cord and axon in spinal nerve
Effectors
Skeletal muscle fibres
Somatic efferent communication
CNS: Brain to spinal cord, upper motor neuron (myelinated)
PNS: Spinal nerve, lower motor neuron (myelinated)
Autonomic efferent nervous system divisions
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
Autonomic efferent nervous system effectors
Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, adipose tissue
Neuron 1
Cell body in brain, axon in brain or spinal cord (CNS)
Neuron 2
Cell body in CNS, axon extends in PNS, myelinated, synapse in autonomic ganglion, pre-ganglionic neuron
Neuron 3
Cell body in PNS, autonomic ganglion, axon extends in PNS to effector organ, unmyelinated, synapse on effector organ, post-ganglionic neuron
Sympathetic
Fight or Flight response, prepares body for acute/ stress responses
Parasympathetic
Rest and Digest response, prepares body for restful situations
