Lecture 16 - how are we all different Flashcards
what is the law of segregation
when gametes form, alleles are seperated so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene
what is the law of independence assortment
the segregation of alleles for one gene occurs independently to that of any other gene
what is the law of dominance
some alleles are dominant whiles others are recessive; an organism with at least one dominant allele will display the effect if the dominant allele
what is an allele
alternative form of a gene that is located in the same place on a chromosome
what is a recessive allele
version of a gene that does not encode a functional protein
what is the exception to the law of independent assortement
genetic linkage = when two genes are close together on a chromosome that are often inherited together
what occurs if the recessive allele is present in both copies
the protein will not be able to form and the pathway will be interfered
when the pathway is interfered what can happen
you can get accumulations of somethings and can be lacking in other things - depending on what gene can not be expressed
