Lecture 16 Flashcards
definne implantation
insertion of an alloplastic material into the body for therapeutic diagnostic, prosthestic, or experimental
define replanation
reinsertion of a tooth back into its jaw socket after removal
define transplantation
transfer of a body part from one site to another
what are the types of implant design?
- endosteal
- superiosteal
- transosteal
- epithelial implant
what is an endosteal blade implant?
- device placed into the alv and or basal bone of mand or max
- not around anymore, causes bone loss
what is a subperiosteal implant?
employs an implant substructure and superstructure
- placed beneath periosteum overlying bony cortex
- used where there is inadequate bone for endosseous implant
- disadvantages: slow rejection of implant, difficult retrievability, bone loss
describe a transosteal implant:
- combines endost and superiost. components
- penetrates cortical plates and passes through full thickness of alv bone
- onl for ant mnd and for support of denture
- aka transmnd. and staple bone implant
describe an epithelial implant
- inserted into oral mucosa
- disadv: painful healing and the requirment for continual wear
- very limited
attachment mech of implants?
osseointegration
what are the components of an implant?
post (cylinder)/fixture–replaces root
abutment (post extension)–mechanically attached to post
crown
criteria for clinical success of dental implants?
- mobility of implant (<1 mm when tested)
- no evidence of radiolucency
- bone loss <1/3 the height of the implant
- any infx, damage, inflamm, must be amenable to tx
- success rate must be 75% + after 5 yrs of functional service
what are the components of implants?
- metallic (Ti or Ti6Al4V, stainless steel, or Co-Cr-Mo)
2. ceramic and ceramic-coated implants
