Lecture 1 Flashcards
define biomaterials
are man made materials designed and applied in clinical dental practice
can be looked at the “material science” perspective which is a field of study that looks at how the body interacts with the mateiral (how it corrodes it, how it wears it down)
OR look at biocompatibility–>how it reacts with the body (corrosion products, unreacted monomers, etc), allergic rxn, cell toxicity
what are the classes of dental materials?
ceramics glasses polymers composites metals and alloys
what are some materials used in general dentistry?
- Impression materials (eg. Alginates and polyvinyl siloxane)
- Dental Stone
- > Sometimes you want a soft material if someone has loose teeth so you don’t pull them out
what are some materials used in operative dentistry?
- dental amalgam
- dental composite fillings
- glass ionomers
- adhesives
- compomers
what are some materials used in pediatric dentistry?
- zinc oxide eugenol cement
- dental amalgam
- glass amalgam
- copalite varnish
- dental resins (filled/unfilled)
what are some materials used in endodontics?
- impressions materials
- gutta percha
- ZOE cement
- epoxy resin sealers
- mineral trioxide aggregate
- ceramics crowns
- dental amalgum
what are some materials used in periodontics?
- sutures
- membranes
- dressing materials
- grafts
what are some materials used in orthodontics?
Impression materials Wires Brackets Must etch before you apply the bracket (and have a clean surface) Adhesives Bands Rubber bands around brackets Also bands at the back molar that is metal fixes brace Can also have ceramic brackets
what are some materials used in prosthodontics and implantology?
cements waxes impressions materials stones resins crowns implants
what are some materials used in oral and maxillofacial surgery?
Sutures
Bone grafts (alloplastic materials)
Bone screws and plates
