Lecture 16 Flashcards

Q

What is transcription

A

Copying a segment of DNA into RNA

DNA-dependent RNA synthesis: Transcription involves the synthesis of RNA molecules using a DNA template. The enzyme responsible for this process is RNA polymerase.
Catalyzed by RNA polymerase: RNA polymerase catalyzes the formation of phosphodiester bonds between ribonucleotides, building an RNA strand that is complementary to the DNA template.
Formation of mRNA: In transcription, RNA polymerase synthesizes mRNA (messenger RNA) by incorporating ribonucleotides based on the sequence of the DNA template. The mRNA molecule is complementary to the DNA template, except that uracil (U) replaces thymine (T) in RNA.
