Lecture 14 - Ocular Drug Delivery Flashcards
Define cornea
envelope over iris and pupil
Define pupil
Dark central zone of the iris that admits light towards the retina
Define iris
Coloured part of eye (protective envelope)
Define conjunctiva
Clear mucus membrane partly covering eye and eyelids
Define aqueous humour
Between iris and lens - bathes and nourishes the lense
Define lens
Focus light towards retina, funnels the light towards the back
Define vitreous humour
Eyeball shape and shock absorption - lives inside the yellow space inside your eyeball
Define choroid
Mostly blood vessels (oxygen and nutrients to outer part of the retina)
Define retina
light sensing sends signals to brain
Define the functions of the eye
is a sensory organ
take light from our surroundings and convert to nerve impulses
optic nerve transmits signals to the brain
brain translates signal into the image, image is produced from all the light being absorbed
gauge distances
Name the two segments of the eye
anterior (front) and posterior (back)
Define dry eye
lack of tears produced
Define blepharitis
Inflamed eyelids
Define conjunctivitis
pink eye
inflammation of conjunctiva
Define uveitis
inflamed uvea tract
Define keratoconus (KCN)
Gradual thinning of cornea
Define cataract
A portion of lens hardens and becomes cloudy
What causes cataract injury?
Age
Eye injury
Previous surgery
Certain medications
Define age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Degeneration of central part of retina (macula) causing abnormal loss of focus
Define central serous retinopathy (CSR)
Disorder of the outer blood-retinal barrier. Fluid build-up under retina.
Define glaucoma
Progressive neuropathy (optic nerve damage)
Fluid build-up changes intraocular pressure above the normal range
What causes glaucoma?
Age
Ethnicity
Genetic profile
Other underlying diseases
What are the types of glaucoma?
Primary open angle glaucoma, acute angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma
