Lecture 14: Neural Control Of Breathing Flashcards
Which two cranial nerves send information from the peripheral chemoreceptors to the NTS?
Glossopharyngeal and Vagus.
Are peripheral chemoreceptors predominantly involved in detecting oxygen or carbon dioxide?
Oxygen but can also detect carbon dioxide.
What are central chemoreceptors involved in detecting?
Only carbon dioxide.
Is oxygen or carbon dioxide responsible for moderating breath by breath modulation?
Carbon dioxide.
Where are central chemoreceptors located?
Brainstem.
Which cranial nerve sends information to the NTS from mechanoreceptors?
Vagus.
What does NTS stand for?
Nucleus Tractus Solitarius.
Do pattern generating neurons stimulate rhythm generating neurons or the other way around?
The other way around. Rhythm stimulates pattern.
