Lecture 13 Flashcards
North Atlantic Deep Water
The sinking of surface water in Greenland that flows southward.
What is the key process in the ocean circulation system?
increasing salinity along the gulf stream
Mild ice-age
surface water sinks only south of Iceland(no sinking north of iceland). This reduces the amount of water that is circulated.
The coldest ice-age mode
Surface water does not sink in the North Atlantic, only a small amount of water is circulated by the conveyor
“bipolar see-saw”
cold temperatures in Northern hemisphere accompanied by warm temperatures in the southern hemisphere and vice versa.
phytoplankton
plankton that are green plants
zooplankton
plankton that do not carry photosynthesis
photosynthesis
CO2+H2O+sunlight–>organic material+O2
respiration and/or decay
O2–>CO2 + H2O + nutrients
What type of relationship does photosynthesis and respiration have?
Closed chemical cycle
What are the main nutrients needed for phytoplankton?
- nitrate or ammonium for the Nitrogen
- phosphate for the phosphorous
- dissolved iron
Why are Phosphorous and Nitrogen depleted in the photic zone?
being consumed
Why are nutrients prevalent below the photic zone?
being produced by decomposition
_ of organic matter produced decays in the surface zone and __ decays in the deep ocean.
90%, 10%
Why would river deltas be so rich in marine life?
Nutrients from river runoff.
