Lecture 12- Groundwater Resources Flashcards
WHAT IS GROUNDWATER
Groundwater is water located in the saturated zone below the earth’s
surface.
What is an aquifer
An aquifer is an underground geological formation which transmits and contains appreciable quantities of groundwater
what are the two main times of aquifer
unconfined and confined.
what are Unconfined aquifers
are characterised by the absence of a low permeability (confining) layer above them
what are CONFINED AQUIFERS
are permeable rock units deep under the ground and overlain by less permeable layers.
what is artesian flow
Pressure from the recharge zones creates high water pressure in the
aquifer beneath the confining layer. Sometimes the pressure is so
great that, where there is a break in the confining layer, water will
naturally rise and bubble to the surface without the need of a pump.
what are recharge zones
replenishment occurs here and aquifer is unconfined and which may be a long distance from the confined portion of the aquifer.
what are the Different types of aquifers
- Unconsolidated aquifer (e.g. well sorted
sand) - Fractured rock aquifer (e.g. fractures in
granite) - Sedimentary rock aquifer (e.g. caverns in
limestone
what is Recharge
is the replenishment of water to a groundwater system from the ground surface. It can occur naturally or artificially
