lecture 12 Flashcards
Courtship Theory
disorder in sexual interest occurs when distortions (exaggerations) in courtship behavior during adolescence become ingrained
4 phases of courtship:
1)Looking for a potential partner-initial phase of courtship (voyeurism)
2)pre tactile interaction-talking or flirting with a potential partner(exhibitionism)
3)tactile interaction- usually consists of touching, hugging, hand holding (also foreplay) (frotteurism)
4)affecting genital union-more commonly known as sexual intercourse(sexual assault)
Courtship theory states that when one of these phases becomes disrupted
disordered sexual behavior occurs when the next phase is desired but not executed properly
2)Learning theory-classical conditioning
Pairing on non sexual stimuli with sexual arousal
3)biological theory-brain organization
Difference in brain organization due to genetic or prenatal factors may make someone more prone to develop disordered sexual interests/fetishes
4)lovemap theory
During childhood, develop template for sexual relationships
Combination of biological predisposition and learning response leads to atypical sexual interest
Triggered by random experiences that produce arousal
disruptions->paraphilia
Cognitive treatments for atypical interests
1)psychoeducation
2)couples therapy
3)CBT
Behavioral Treatments of atypical interests
1)aversion therapy: pairing of unpleasant stimuli with problematic stimuli
2)Social skills training: learn to better interact with appropriate target
3)orgasmic reconditioning-pairing of sexual arousal with appropriate target
Pharmaceuticals
1)selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
2)anti-androgens(also called chemical castration)
2)anti-androgens(also called chemical castration)
Reduces sex drive (very extreme method)
Reduces and blocks all androgen receptors (very extreme with very extreme side effects)
CPA, MPA
Carne’s 4 step cycle: triggered by negative affect of sexual compulsions
Preoccupation: think of nothing than the sexual act
Rituals:engages in rituals as a prelude to sexual act
Ie: scroll on tinder
Compulsive sexual behavior: finds somebody to act on sexual behavior and feels they have no control over it
Despair:temporarily feeling good then feeling shame and guilt
Sexual sensation seeking:
some people search for sexual feeling that are novel and intense sexual behaviors
Attitudes supporting violence against women (Hald (2010))
Conclusion: overall significant positive relationships between pornography use and attitudes supporting violence against women
BUT we can tell if its violent people watching porn or porn leads to more violent attitudes
Porn and sexual aggression (Vega and Malamuth)
Porn contribute to sexual aggression when someone is already at high risk of aggression
The confluence model of sexual aggression
Sexual aggression may be conceptualized as resulting from the convergence of several factors
Motivation + disinhibition + opportunity
