Lecture 11: Radiology of the thorax 2 Flashcards
What causes air space opacification?
- Fluid (or tissue) within the lung that usually contains air - i.e water, blood, pus - i.e cancer
What are the types of descriptor terms for opacification
- Focal - Multifocal asymmetrical - Lobular (lobe of lung) - Patchy (Incomplete airspace filling with air filled region, opp = confluent) -> Central or symmetrical Distribution: Peripheral / central or perihilar, symmetrical or asymetrical
What are a notable features of a pneumothorax:
- pleural collapse (hemidiaphragm flat) - lung collapse
What are a notable feature of pleural effusion?
- Blunting of costo-diaphragmatic angle
What are some notable features of lobar pneumonia?
- Lobar anatomy limits infection spread - May see air bronchogram in consolidation
What is on the left and on the right?

Left: HF
Right: Pneumonia

Tension pneumothorax

Traumatic pneumothorax

Pneumomediastinum

Pleural effusion

Heart failure

Pulmonary embolism

Hiatus hernia

Lobar pneumonia (LUL)

Pneumonia with cavaties

Pneumonia with cavities i.e E-coli

Aspiration pneumonia often posterior - bacterial

Diffuse patchy opacification

Pneumocystis (fungal) i.e in immunosepressed

Aspergillosis (fungal)
