Lecture 11- Interspecific competition Flashcards
What is the effect of competition on species 1 and 2?
-both negative
What is the effect of predation or parasitism on species 1 and 2?
-negative on 2 -positive for 1
What is the effect of mutualism on species 1 and 2?
-both positive
What is the effect of commensalism on species 1 and 2?
-positive on 2 -0 on 1
What is the effect of ammensalism on species 1 and 2?
-negative on 2 -0 on 1
What is interspecific competition?
-interactions between individuals of different species with a shared environment for a resource in limited supply
What does interspecific competition lead to?
-reduction in population rates (growth, survivorship or fecundity) of one or both species
What are the two strongest influences in interspecific competition?
-competitions and predation
What must be observed to prove competition is taking place?
-reduction in population rates between two species
What is interference interspecific competition?
-direct interaction between individuals of different species over limited resource such as fighting over it -bird trying to steal a catch from another
What is exploitative interspecific competition?
-where one species reduces or more efficiently uses a resource thus depleting it for other species -zebras eating grass, others can’t have as much
Is interspecific competition symmetrical or asymmetrical?
-almost always asymmetrical
Describe what is happening to the POPULATION size when two species put together:
-the one going down, dies off= excluded by the superior competitor
–also affects the superior one= the population size of it is also lower
Who loves you more than anything?
Jack!
Describe what is happening to the carrying capacity of the two species:
-survive together, they both do a bit worse than on their own but can both survive at relatively good level of survivorship
