Lecture 11: BIM's Technological Collaboration Flashcards
Interoperability
The ability to exchange data between applications and for multiple applications to jointly contribute to the work
Direct links
Data exchange between two applications via an API (Application Programing Interface), implemented as programming level interfaces.
File-based exchange
Data exchange through a model file using a proprietary exchange format, most commonly used despite data loss and limited communication/synchronization.
Object & Server-based exchange
Data exchange through a database management server, better synchronization.
Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)
An industry-developed product data model; broad support from most software companies
Steel Integration Standard, V2 (CIS/2)
An industry-developed standard for structural steel design, analysis, and fabrication
GUIDs-based Model Synchronization
Used to track object updates and edits.
Interfacing technologies
Tools/functions that repurpose BIM models for different phases and purposes
Semi-automatic interfacing
Current method, step-by-step conversion of a design model to an analysis model
Automatic interfacing
Using AI to rewrite information.
