Lecture 10: Drawing Generation and BIM Applications Flashcards
Why do we still need BIM? (3)
- Existing contractual processes
- Work cultures
- Paper is easiest
Drawing generation
BIM is great in managing/extracting drawings since it’s based on arrangement of object instances, drawings, reports, & datasets. Drawings, reports, & datasets are consistent if taken from the same version of the BIM model.
BIM Platforms
A core BIM information generator based on the parametric object-based modeling capability
BIM tools
A BIM information sender, receiver, & processor used within a BIM process
BIM environments
A set of BIM applications supporting multiple information and process pipelines in a project
BIM platform examples (2)
Civil3D, Revit
BIM tool examples (2)
Navisworks, procore BIM
Civil3D
Designed for civil engineering and infrastructure projects, difficult to use
Revit
Most widely applied building BIM modeling application. Organized and intuitive interface that is interoperable with a wide range of BIM platforms & tools. Has limited support for complex curved shapes-In-memory system.
Digital Project
Good for complex shapes due to less lag. Complex user interface, hard to learn.
Tekla Structures
For design, analysis & documentation of structural elements. Great to model very complex structural elements. Takes long time to master
SmartPlant 3D
For modeling plants (industrial projects, such as power plants, mining/gas, etc…
Navisworks
Multipurpose design/construction management tool.
Cloud Systems for the Construction Phases (Procore, Autodesk BIM360/Build)
BIM-based construction management unified platforms w/ mobile accessibility, covering typical management activities.
