Lecture 11 Flashcards
“Global”
Left Visual Field (Right Hemisphere)
Big picture of an object e.g. House
“Local”
Right Visual Field (Left Hemisphere)
Details e.g. windows, doors
Brown-Séquard re. hemispheres
Educate the “primitive” right hemisphere
Alternate use of the right and left side of the body
Planum temporale
Part of the temporal lobe that is larger on the left than right hemisphere
Presumed to reflect language specialization
Cerebral Petalias
Appears as though torque has been applied to the brain
Anterior part of right hemisphere is bigger
Posterior part of left hemisphere is bigger
Seen as far as 3.5 million years ago, around the time of bipedalism
Dichotic listening
Right ear has advantage for words
Left ear has advantage for listening
This is because there is contralateral projection (but not entirely) of sound
Corpus callosum
Part of the brain that connects the left and right hemispheres
Information travels across it
When disconnected, you get a split brain patient
Control of facial expression
RH controls spontaneous expressions (a natural smile)
LH controls intentional expressions (a fake smile)
Imbalange Idea
(Outdated) idea that mental illnesses came from imbalances in hemispheres
Where is face processing locatd?
Right hemisphere (left visual field for split brain patients)
