Lecture #11 Flashcards
What are some heat indications?
Subacute and chronic inflammatory condtions and pain subacute edema removal decreased ROM resolution of swelling trigger points muscle gurading and spasm subacute muscle strain or lig. sprain subacute contusion and infection
What is the body’s response to thermotherapy?
Increased circulation, increased cell permeability
Increased skin nutrition
Vasodilation cutaneously and subcutaneously
Oxygen delivery causes analgesia, muscle spasm relaxation and decreased spasticity
Heat lessens stimulus threshold of muscle spindle
Connective tissue elasticity increases
Increased metabolism
Hyperemia
Pooling of blood in an area or body part
Thermotherapy agents:
MHP, warm gell packs, heating pad, warm/hot whirlpool, chemical additives, infrared heat lamps, diathermies, paraffin baths, fluidotherapy
How many layers of toweling need to be used to protect the pt?
6 layers = 1”
What temp. is a Warm whirlpool set to?
Extremity 98-108
Body 98-102
Normal Tx time for warm whirpool?
15-20 minutes
What is paraffin bath?
mixture of paraffin wax and mineral oil @ 126 degrees, gives relief from dry skin and has heating effects
How many times you dip in paraffin bath?
6x
What you do for paraffin tx?
Dip 6x allowing to harden after each dip
Place in plastic bag w/ toweling to hold in heat
Tx 20-30 min
Remove wax and place back in heater
Infrared lamps: how to use?
creates superficial heat (1mm)
have pt. positioned 20” away for 20 mins.
What s fluidotherapy?
Dry whirlpool w/ finely ground corn cob heated to 115 degrees.
Tx : 20 mins
not to use w/ open wounds
Heat contraindications:
Acute musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions
Impaired circulation
PVD (thrombophlebitic area)
Skin anesthesia
Over tumors
CAD
Hemorrhagic area
Over abdominal, pelvic, and low back areas of pregnant women
Confused patients
Open wounds
Do not use if edema is present and you are unsure of the cause
What can contrast baths be used for?
been effective in treating DOMS
sub-acute swelling, produce vasodilation and constriction, and reduce necrotic cells
Tx ratio + time for contrast baths
3:1 or 4:1 (hot:cold)
end w/ most effective
16-20 minutes
Temps. for the water in contrast baths
Cold = 50-60 Hot = 104-106
