What is the body’s response to thermotherapy?

A

Increased circulation, increased cell permeability
Increased skin nutrition
Vasodilation cutaneously and subcutaneously
Oxygen delivery causes analgesia, muscle spasm relaxation and decreased spasticity
Heat lessens stimulus threshold of muscle spindle
Connective tissue elasticity increases
Increased metabolism
Hyperemia
Pooling of blood in an area or body part

Heat contraindications:

A

Acute musculoskeletal and inflammatory conditions
Impaired circulation
PVD (thrombophlebitic area)
Skin anesthesia
Over tumors
CAD
Hemorrhagic area
Over abdominal, pelvic, and low back areas of pregnant women
Confused patients
Open wounds
Do not use if edema is present and you are unsure of the cause

A

What are counter-irritants? What they do? examples?

A

Chemical effects, causing sensory receptors in skin to fire but very superficial. I.e. biofreeze and atomic bomb

A

Menthol, methyl salicylate, camphor, and capsaicin

Is massage while applying a counter-irritant more beneficial than the actual stuff you apply?

A

Yes! So keep rubbing them down!
