lecture 11 Flashcards
le chateliers principle
if the equilibrium is disturbed by pressure, temp or conc changes,, the system adjusts itself to a new equilibrium by counteracting the effect of the change
exothermic reaction + increase in temp
reactants are favoured
equilibrium moves to favour reactants
balanced temperature increase by converting heat to an enthalpy increase
endothermic reaction + temp increase
equilibrium shifts to increase products. balanced temp increase by converting heat to enthalpy increase
what does vant hoffs equation allow us to do
allows us to calculate 🔺H by plotting measured values of ln(k) against 1/T
in order to find 🔺H from a plot of ln(k) against 1/T,, what must be true
🔺H must be constant with changes in T
🔺H shouldn’t depend on T
does adding an ideal gas info a system with the same volume change the partial pressure
no!!
therefore no change in equilibrium
does compressing the system to a smaller volume change partial pressure
yes!!!
linear pressure must increase faster than squared pressure to keep the equilibrium constant the same
why doesn’t K or 🔺G* depend on pressure
their standard state is standard pressure
do the amount of gases at equilibrium depend on Pressure
nope
