Lecture 11 Flashcards
What are some natural internal and external processes that cause climate change?
Modulations of the solar cycles, volcanic eruptions, persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or in land use
What does climate change refer to?
A change in the state of the climate that can be identified by changes in the mean variability of its properties and that persists for an extended period (decades or longer)
What is the IPCC?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change UN body responsible for advancing knowledge on human-induced climate change.
What are the IPCC 3 working groups?
- The physical science basis
- Impacts, Adaptation and vulnerability
- Mitigation of climate change
What are some observed effects of climate change?
Hot extremes, heavy precipitation, and agricultural and ecological droughts, the annual mean surface temperature is increasing.
What contributes to global carbon emissions?
Fossil fuels, industry, and land use change
What sinks the carbon emissions?
Land and ocean
What contributes to emitting methane?
Fossil fuel production and use, agriculture, biomass and biofuel burning, wetlands, permafrost, wild animals
What are some methane sinks?
Chemical reactions in the atmosphere and sinks in the soil.
What are RPCs?
Representative Concentration Pathways: to explore and investigate climate futures, climate change projections were developed using sets of different inputs based on projections of greenhouse gas emissions, aerosols, land use change.
How long will global surface temperature continue to increase under all emissions scenarios considered?
Until mid-century
When will global warming of 1.5 and 2 be exceeded unless deep reductions?
During the 21st century
What are some common regional changes in the Arctic?
Increased surface air temperature and precipitation as rainfall, mass loss of glaciers even if global temperatures are stabilized
