Lecture 10 - pressure therapy Flashcards
What is the goal of pressure therapy
empty lymphatic or venous system without increasing the load on heart or damaging vascular tissue
- can improve venous pump
- reduce capillary filtration
- facilitate lymphatic drainage
Different bandaging materials
- gauze
- cotton
- elastic
Properties of bandaging materials
Type 1 - conforming or retention
Type 2 - light support
Type 3 - compression
Treatment goals of bandaging
- reduce swelling
- reduce pain
- immobilisation or support
Basic philosophy of taping
tape applied under tension, with the tissue in a shortened position
Push method
clinician pushes tape towards target region as the soft tissues are pulled towards the advancing tape
Pull method
Clinician pulls tape towards the target region as the soft tissues are pushed towards the advancing tape
mechanical effect of tape
McConnell tape: produced medial glide and tilt of patella
Augmented low-dye tape: reposition calcaneus, lift navicular
Additional taping effects
Neuromuscular:
- inhibit or facilitate muscle activity
- alter timing of muscle activation
- increase joint position sense
Physiological:
- increase confidence and comfort
