Lecture 10 - Chemical Bonding 4 Flashcards
what is metallic bonding?
the electrostatic attraction between metal ions and mobile delocalised electrons
what are two requirements for metallic bonding?
- the metal should have low ionisation energies
- metal should have vacant valence orbitals
give 5 characteristics of metals
- great strength
- good conductors
- malleable
- ductile
- lustrous
what are intramolecular forces?
forces that hold atoms together within a molecule
what are intermolecular forces?
attractive forces between molecules
what are the 4 intermolecular forces and give them in order of strongest to weakest
- ion dipole
- hydrogen bonds
- dipole -dipole forces
- London dispersion forces (VDW)
Describe dipole dipole forces
relate to permanent molecule dipoles, found in binds with an electronegativity difference and require a non-uniform charge difference
Describe ion dipole forces
electrostatic interaction between an ion and an uncharged polar molecule in which strength depends on charge of the ion and magnitude of the dipole
Describe ice
each water molecule is hydrogen bonded to 4 others in a tetrahedral formation
