Lecture 1 Urinalysis Flashcards
What does specific gravity test for
It is a measure of urine concentration.
How concentrated the urine is.
Compares the amount of substances dissolved in the urine compared to pure water
Specific gravity
What figures do they range from
- 000 none present
1. 035 concentrated urine
What does pH test for
It tests the acid / alkaline base balance In the body.
What could turn the bodies pH more acidic
Acidosis
Alkalosis
Ingesting acidic food
High protein
What could form when the pH is acidic
Calculus (kidney stones)
What does the protein test do
Measures the amount of albumin in urine.
Where and when will albumin be present
Will be present in the kidneys when kidney dysfunction starts to develop.
What is proteinuria
High protein levels
What is multiple myeloma
High levels of protein in the blood
What does glucose test for
Tests if any glucose is present in your urine
What could cause glucose in the urine
High glucose concentration in the blood.
Reduction in kidney threshold and kidneys begin to excrete glucose.
Drugs. Pregnancy. Liver disease
What is the term called for glucose in urine
Glycosuria
What will ketones test for
Look for ketones in urine which is a product of fat metabolism
Having ketones in the urine what could this indicate
Insufficient insulin
What will the blood test for
Detects haemoglobin in the urine
