Lecture 1: Temperature Regulation & Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
Is hypothermia or hyperthermia more serious?
A
Hyperthermia. You can heat someone up more easily, and cooling is less damaging. But they die if temp goes over 43.3 degrees C.
2
Q
What are the two types of body temperature and which one varies more?
A
Core temperature and skin (or shell) temperature. Skin temperature varies much much more. Core is kept around 37.8 degrees C and varies only a little.
3
Q
Where are the thermoreceptors of the CNS located in humans?
A
Hypothalamus.
4
Q
How small a change in temperature can these thermoreceptors detect?
A
Can detect a temperature change of 0.01 degrees C.
5
Q
Which type of fat cells metabolise fat?
A
Brown fat cells.
