Lecture 1: Role of Microbiology in a Lab Flashcards
What can microbiology be used for?
Identification
Sensitivity testing
Surveillance
Quality
Health and Safety
What is Sensitivity Testing?
Determines antibiotic effectiveness
Used to find the best treatment for a bacterial infection
What does Quality entail in a microbiology lab setting?
Running tests on control samples to make sure that they work thus ensuring valid results.
Includes anonymous samples
Role of Health and Safety?
Wearing the correct PPE for the appropriate lab
What is the role of Identification?
Helps predict the severity of the disease so we know what it is
Helps determine antibiotic sensitivity if we have the data
What is the role of Surveillance?
Tracks how the bacteria spreads through the body
Tracks outbreaks e.g food poisoning
The ability to produce a report on the organism to track evolution and antibiotic resistances
If Organisms are more resistant to antibiotics what can be done?
2nd line antibiotics can be used
