Lecture 1: Introduction Flashcards
Name 4 types of pathogens
Viruses
Fungi
Bacteria
Parasites
What is a PAMP?
Pathogen associated molecular pattern
What are the main cell types in the immune system?
Phagocytes
B cells
T cells
Dendritic cells
What are the 2 types of responses?
Humoral and cell mediated
Which cells are involved in humoral response?
B cells
Which cells are involved in cell mediated response?
T cells
What are types of recognition molecules?
Cell surface T and B cell receptors
Antibodies
How are innate recognition molecules encoded?
By genes from parents
How are adaptive recognition molecules created?
Randomly in life by DNA rearrangements
What cells can recognise PAMPS?
Macrophages and natural killer cells
What does the binding of PAMPs and macrophages to natural killer cell trigger?
Phagocytosis or killing
When immune cells are attracted to the site of infection, what does this cause?
Inflammatory repsoses
What is haematopoesis?
Immune cells are produced and developed in primary lymphoid tissues. They originate from hematopoetic stem cells.
What are the primary lymphoid organs?
Bone marrow and thymus
Where do B lymphocytes develop?
In contact with with stromal cells of the bone marrow?
