What are the components of Sport Medicine?

What are the goals of Sport Medicine?
To help active individuals (recreation or competition) achieve optimal health and meet their performance goal.
Health is the over-ridding goal, health > performance. Sport medicine professionals cannot recommend strategies of performance detrimental to health
What are the broadfield medical practices related to physical activity and sport?
- Performance enhancement
- Injury care and prevention
- multidisciplinary
From the outer ring to inner ring describe the Athletes circle of care.
The outer ring has health professionals like the family doctor and notably the parents. the next ring in is the athletic training staff. The next ring in is the coaching staff. The inner part of the circle is the athlete. The athletes circle encompasses mental and physical performance.
Why are the parents important in the athletes circle?
Parents are the ones who implement the health professionals orders, as well as buy and cook food.
What is the role of the health care provider in the athletes circle of care?
- Promotes athletes health ( life long fitness/ wellness and injury prevention)
- Enhance performance
Describe the athlete management approach.
The athlete has little influence over practitioners suggestions (the performance manager consults the HC professional). There is little comm btn practitioners.
Describe the coach manager model.
The coach is the communicate for the athlete, the athlete feels they have no say. No comm btn practitioners.
Describe the athlete-centered approach.
Everyone reports to athlete, the athlete feels like they have autonomy.
What is IST?
Integrated sports teams, is an interdisciplinary approach to promoting sport performance and athlete health. It involves people from diverse backgrounds collaborating to develop athlete goals/ best care/ performance.
What does IST support?
- Rational goal setting and prioritization
- Reduction of confusion on the part of the athlete and providers
- evidence based care
- resource distribution (looks at where money is best spent, athletes on a budget yo)
Define Scope of Practice.
The procedures, actions, and processes that a health care practitioner is knowledgeable, competent and permitted to undertake in keeping in terms with their professional license or registration. Conflict can occur with role overlap, IST must define who does what,
Describe the roles of the Team Physician.
- pre screening (fitness of athlete, med history)
- diagnoses injury, decides treatment
- decides disqualifications
- attends games/ practices
- has obligation to employer to report on athlete (conflict of confidentiality)
Describe the roles of the Family Physician.
- provide comprehensive ongoing care, sport/non sport related
- not affiliated with team (bound by patient doc confidentiality)
Describe the roles of the coach.
- motivate/ support/ demo / strategy
- must be aware of athlete needs
- understand their own limitations (refer to practitioners)
- directly responsible for injury prevention and setting req. to avoid injury
