LECTURE 1: INTRO TO BIO Flashcards
What is biology?
a science about life encompassing the study of living organisms and the chemical that constitute life.
What is the scientific method?
The scientific method is ‘a way to do research that involves testing and observation.’
What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis is ‘an explanation that can be tested.’
What is a theory?
A theory is ‘a hypothesis that has been confirmed numerous times.’
What is inductive reasoning?
Deriving general conclusions from specific observations (descriptive)
-ex. every cat I’ve seen purrs therefore all cats must purr.
What is deductive reasoning?
applying general principles to predict specific outcomes (explanative)
-ex. all mammals have lungs. Dolphins are mammals. Dolphins have lungs.
What are the eight properties of life?
The eight properties are: Order, Growth, Reproduction, Metabolism, Response to the environment, Homeostasis, Adaptation, Evolution.
What is the organization of living things?
Atoms, molecules, macromolecules, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
What are the three domains and six kingdoms of life?
The three domains of life are bacteria, archaea, and eukarya. The four kingdoms of life is bacteria, archaea, protista, fungi, plantae, and Animalia.
What are the four major theories in biology?
The four theories are: The Cell Theory, The Gene Theory, The Theory of Heredity, The Theory of Evolution.
What is the cell theory?
all living things consist of one or more cells, cells are the basic unit of life, and all cells originate from pre-existing cells.
What is the gene theory?
Genetic material mainly determines the characteristics of an organism.
What is the theory of heredity?
the passing down of genetic information from one generation to the next.
What is the theory of evolution?
Natural selection selects the most adaptive organisms and generates the diversity of life. Developed by Charles Darwin
The survival of the fittest is the animal with the traits best suited for the environment are more likely to survive and pass their traits down to their offspring.
