Lecture 1: Intro (Anatomical Terms & Movements) Flashcards
Anatomical Planes:
Median sagittal plane
Sagittal plane
Median sagittal plane: Vertical plane passing through center of body (divide into left and right halves)
Sagittal plane: Any vertical plane parallel (side by side) to median plane
Anatomical Plane:
(Frontal) Coronal plane
Any vertical plane perpendicular (intersect at a 90° angle) to median sagittal plane (divide into front and back)
Anatomical Plane:
Transverse plane
Any vertical plane perpendicular to both sagittal and coronal planes (divide into top and bottom)
Anatomical Planes
Which anatomical plane is in this cross section?
Transverse
Which anatomical plane is in this cross section?
Coronal
Which anatomical plane is this cross section in?
Saggital
Which anatomical plane is this cross section in?
Saggital
Spatial Relationships
Superior
Inferior
Superior: nearer to head
Inferior: nearer to feet
Is the elbow superior or inferior to the shoulder?
Inferior (nearer to feet)
Spatial Relationships
Medial
Lateral
Medial: nearer to median plane
Lateral: further from median plane
Within the foot, is digit 1 medial or lateral to digit 5?
Medial (nearer to median plane)
Spatial Relationships
Proximal
Distal
Proximal: nearer to trunk or point of origin
Distal: further from trunk or point of origin
Is the knee proximal or distal to the hip?
Distal (further from hip)
Spatial Relationships
Anterior
Posterior
Anterior: nearer to front
Posterior: nearer to back
Is the nose anterior or posterior to the ear?
Anterior (nearer to front)
Spatial Relationships
Superficial
Deep
Superficial: nearer to surface
Deep: further from surface
Is the skin deep or superficial to the muscles?
Superficial (nearer to surface)
Laterality:
Bilateral
Unilateral
Ipsilateral
Contralateral
Bilateral: on both sides (paired)
Unilateral: on one side
Ipsilateral: on the same side
Contralateral: on the opposite side
Body Surfaces:
Ventral
Dorsal
Palmar
Plantar
Ventral: inferior side/abdominal surface
Dorsal: superior side/back surface of anything that protrudes anteriorly from the body
Palmar: palm side of hand
Plantar: sole side of the foot
Movement:
ABduction vs. ADduction
Movement:
Flexion vs. Extension
Movement:
Medial vs. Lateral Rotation
