Lecture 1- HM And The Anatomy And Function Of Temporal Lobes Flashcards
Epileptic seizures?
Sudden excitation in groups of neurons with a loss of inhibitory potential
Who is HM?
He had severe temporal lobe epilepsy
Underwent bilateral medial surgery
What is released in excitatory synapse?
Glutamate
What is released in a inhibitory synapse?
GABA
What is temporal lobe epilepsy?
Recurrent unprovoked seizures from medial or lateral temporal lobes
What are the 2 types of temporal epilepsy?
Simple- feel a change but no loss of awareness
Complex- loss of awareness
Hippocampal sclerosis?
Neuron cell death, increase in goal cells
Occurs early in life
Past infections, tumours
Declarative memory is?
Conscious access to information learned previously
What does HM tell us about memory?
Temporal lobes are essential
Especially for anterograde memories
And that there is a difference between declarative and procedural memories
What is the hippocampus’ role?
Learning and consolidating novel information
Consolidation theory?
After consolidation info can be retrieved without hippocampus involvement
Multiple trace theory?
Always involves hippocampus system ( for episodic)
