Lecture 1 - DA Flashcards
Define plant community.
Collection of interacting species within a given environment.
Define community.
Group of organisms.
Define association in ecology. What is it defined by?
Lowest level in vegetation hierarchy, usually defined by species.
Define formation in ecology. What is it defined by?
Highest level in vegetation hierarchy. Defined by physiognomy.
Define physiognomy. Give examples.
Growth form and structure, such as grasslands - biomes.
Name 2 ways plant communities are classified. Which is more widely used?
- Use only the properties of the vegetation.
- Use a range of ecosystem properties.
Number 1 is more widely used.
What are the 5 major Australian biomes?
Desert Open forest Alpine Grassland Rainforest
What kind of classifications are biomes, and what are they defined by?
Are higher level classifications defined by their dominant vegetation type.
What percent of Australia is a desert? Are Australian deserts true deserts?
70& of Australia is a desert.
Australian deserts aren’t true deserts.
How much rainfall do arid regions receive annually? What about semiarid?
Arid - under 200mm
Semiarid - 250mm
In the north of Australia, what is the annual rainfall, and what are 2 reasons why?
380-500mm
Due to high temperature and evaporation.
What are deserts characterised by?
Low rainfall and unpredictability.
How much annual rainfall occurs in a mallee?
300mm
What are 4 characteristics of Australian deserts, and its soil?
Characteristically flat, with sandy soil, clay, and loam.
What kinds of plants tend to live in Australian deserts?
Endurers or avoiders.
