Lecture 1 - Background and History Flashcards
Who is Marie Francois Xavier Bichat?
- “father of modern histology”
- organs made of “membranes” (tissues)
- described 21 “membranes” without the use of a microscope
Who is Rudolph Carl Virchow?
-coupled histology with pathology
Who is Matthias Schleiden?
- botanist
- credited with cell theory
Who is Theodore Schwann?
- zoologist
- distinguished 5 classes of tissues
- credited with cell theory
Who is Albert Kolliker?
-created the first textbook on histology and created a textbook on embryology
Who are the Janssens?
- uncle and nephew
- first compound microscope (magnification of 30x)
Who is Robert Hooke?
- described cork and other cells
- introduced the term “cell”
Who’s is Anthony Leeuwenhoek?
- made 247 simple microscopes with magnification of 100x
- sent 26 to the Royal society
- observed RBCs, protozoa, striations of skeletal muscle, sperm cells, and bacteria
What is refractive index?
The change in the velocity of light as it changes mediums
- velocity of light / velocity of light in transmitting medium
- RI of air is 1
What is refractive power and how is it measured?
Measure of how much a lens bends light.
1 diopter = 1 meter / focal length
What is the focal point of a lens?
The point in space through which all parallel rays of light pass through after passing through the lens.
What is the focal length of a lens?
The distance between the center of the lens and the focal point.
How do you increase resolution?
- increase R.I.
- decrease shorter wavelength
