Lecture 1 and 2 - Matter Flashcards
Define Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
List 3 states of Matter
Solid, liquid and gas.
Explain the features of a solid
- Rigid
- Fixed vol and shape.
Explain the features of a liquid
- Definite vol
- Assumes shape of container.
Explain the features of gas
- No fixed vol or shape
- Takes the shapes and vol of its container
Define Physical Properties
Characteristics that are directly observable and unique to a substance.
Define Chemical Properties
Characteristics that describe the behaviour of matter.
Define pure substances
Fixed composition; cannot be further purified.
Define Mixtures
A combination of two or more pure substances.
Define Physical Change
Change in one or more physical properties of a substance, not in its chemical composition.
Define Chemical Change
A given substance becomes a new substance or substances with dif. properties and dif. composition.
Define Elements
Cannot be subdivided by chemical or physical means.
Define Compounds
Elements united in fixed ratios.
Define Homogenous Matter
Uniform composition throughout.
Define Heterogenous Matter
Nonuniform composition.
