Lec 3 - Atoms Flashcards
1
Q
What was Dalton’s Atomic Theory (1808)?
A
- Elements are made of tiny particles called atoms.
- All atoms of a given element are identical.
- The atoms of a given element are different from those of any other element.
- Atoms of one element can combine with atoms of other elements to form compounds. A given compound always has the same relative numbers and types of atoms.
- Atoms are indivisible in chemical processes. Atoms are not created or destroyed in chemical reactions. A chemical reaction simply changes the way the atoms are grouped together.

Q
What did Atonine Laurent Lavouisier (1743 - 1794) discover?
A
He further evidenced dalton’s theory and created the law of conversion of Mass which is Matter can neither be created or destroyed.
3
Q
Define Compound
A
Distinct substance that is composed of the atoms of two or more elements and always contains exactly the same relative masses of those elements.
