Lecture 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Define IoT
A
Network connectivity extends to objects, sensors and everyday tiems to allow information to be generated and exchanged with minimal human intervention
2
Q
What are the projections for IoT?
A
100B devices connected by 2025
Global impact of $11T by 2025
3
Q
Challenges for IoT (headings)
A
Societal
Technical
Legal
4
Q
Describe the societal challenges facing IoT
A
- Privacy: You produce data which can be an invasion of your privacy.
- Surveillance: Be used to monitor people - ethics.
- Security: Vulnerabilities making it easy to hack with little to no security standards. Common IoT devices with a security flaw can potentially be hacked in mass
5
Q
Describe the technical challenges facing IoT
A
- Sensor: Physical limitations
- Power consumption
- Security & Privacy: Flaws in design can lead to loopholes in bulk items (lead to attack)
- Data analytics: Computing power and skill gap
- Standards: Varying standards and issues of interoperability (vendor lock-in)
6
Q
What has caused the uprising of IoT?
A
- Connectivity
- Adoption of IP networking
- Computing economics
- Miniaturisation
- Advancing DA
- Cloud computing
7
Q
What are legal challenges facing IoT
A
- Data misuse
- Data retention laws (GDPR)
- Legal liability for misuse
- Security breaches
- Civil rights / LE
