Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is information visualization?
A mapping between discrete data and a visual representation.
Information design
starts with data that already has a clear structure and its goal is to express it visually
Visual analytics
is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces
7 basic data types and the new ones
1,2,3, multi dimensional, temporal, tree, network, multimedia
Information visualization pipeline
What are four levels of NBGM?
Domain, abstraction, technique, algorithm
What is domain level (NBGM)?
Blocks at the domain level describe a specific situation, which encompasses a group of target users, their field of interest, their questions, and their measurements or data.
What is Abstraction level?
- What kind of blocks does it include?
- Are these blocks designed or identified?
consists of task blocks and data blocks. Examples are the tasks of finding outliers and trends; the dataset types of tables, networks, and text; and the data attribute types of categorical, ordered, and quantitative. Task blocks are identified by the designer as being suitable for a particular domain situation block, just as the situation blocks themselves are identified at the level above. Data blocks, however, are designed.
What is technique level?
What to draw on screen
What is algorithm level?
How to draw on screen
In what ways does info viz amplifies cognition?
- increased resources
- reduced search
- enhanced recognition of patterns
- preceptual inference
