Lecture 1 Flashcards
Who came up with the origin of the term stem cell?
Ernst Haeckel
what is sense 1?
the unicellular origin of multicellular life
what is sense 2?
the fertilised oocyte as the origin of all cells
who came up with germ plasm continuity?
August Weismenn
which 2 scientists came up with hematopoetic?
Peppenheim and maximow
what is a teratoma?
a mixed array of embryonic tissues the single cells can lead to tumours/ cancerous stem cells
what is a pluripotent stem cell?
cells that are self replicating and are known to develop into cells and tissues of the three primary germ layers
what are the significance of teratomas?
they produce EC cells which are stem cells that resemble pluripotent stem cells
what is a stem cell?
a relatively primitive cell that is capable of:
1) self renewal
2) make a range of cell types (potency)
3) convert to different cell types (differentiation)
what can stem cells do?
they can build embryos and tissues (development) and repair tissues (regeneration)
what is a problem with tissue specific stem cells?
they are difficult to isolate and maintain in vitro
what potency are tissue specific stem cells and what do they do?
they are multipotent - build and repair tissue
where can tissue specific stem cells be derived from?
foetal tissue and adults
what are 2 ways pluripotent stem cells can be derived?
early mammalian embryos or reprogrammed using transcription factors
what is the 2 advantages of pluripotent stem cells?
1) grow indefinitely in vitro
2) pluripotent - make all cells of the body
