Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the 9 components of the masticatory system?
1) Dentition
2) periodontal supporting structures
3) Maxilla and mandible
4) TMJ
5) Muscle of checks, lips and tongue
6) Mandibular vasculature
7) Vasculature
8) innervation
9) soft tissue
What does it mean to be in maximal intercuspal position?
Maxillary and mandibular dentition interdigitate
- No relation to the condyle positon
- Best fit of teeth
What does it mean to be in centeric occlusion?
its the occulsion of teeth when the mandible is centeric relation! may not coincide with the maximal intercuspation!
What does it mean to be in central relation?
Centeral relation is completely independent of tooth position and its the position when the condyle is with contact with the thinnest avascular portion of the articular disk.
What are the facts on central relation?
- Independent of tooth position and contact
- Anterior superior position against articular eminence
- Cental relation is rotatry motion only
What is centeric position?
Centeric position is the position of mandible in centeral relation.
Retruded contact position:
guided occlusal position of the most retruded positon of the condyles in the joint
What is postural positon?
its basically the positon of the mandible with the muscles mostly relaxed without contraction
What is the occlusal vertical dimentsion?
When the occludinig members are in contact and measure two vertical points on the face one on the toop and one in th emandible! so basially the nose and the chin
What is the interocclusal positon?
distance between occluding at any specific location of mandible and maxilla
What is the interocclusal rest space?
Rest occlusal vertical dimention minus the occluding vertical dimension
What is the transveres horizontal axis?
its the hinge movement an imaginary line drawn between two condyle allows for rotational movements
What is the hinge movement?
Rotational only of the mandible
What is translational movement?
its the linear movement with out rotation
