Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the three main parts of the brain?
Brain stem, diencephalon, telencephalon
What are the three parts of the brain stem?
Medulla, cerebellum, and midbrain
What are the two parts of the diencephalon?
Thalamus and hypothalamus
What is in the telencephalon?
Limbic system, basal ganglia, and cerebral cortex
What does the thalamus do?
Controls visual and auditory processing
What does the hypothalamus do?
Controls release of hormones
What is in the limbic system?
The amygdaloid and hippocampus
Cerebral aqua ducts
Pathways between areas of the brain
What are the two functions of CSF
Supplies nutrients and provides pressure for structure
What is the function of a neuron
To transmit information
What is the function of dendrites
Receive information
What is the function of the cell body?
The cell body collects information from many dendrites and decides whether to fire. If it gets excitatory input, it fires leading to an action potential
What happens at the axon hillock
The information is summed. If it passes threshold it fires and sends information to other neurons through the axon
What is the synapse?
The gap between two neurons
Activity between neurons is
Chemical
