Lecture 1 Flashcards
What other resources are typically managed for when timber is the target resource?
- Water quality
- Fisheries
- Biodiversity and animal habitat
- Soils
- Recreation
- VQO’s
What is IRM?
Considering multiple resources in a given area and time period to conceive an organized sustained yield management plan that satisfies the need for the production and extraction of target resources while keeping in mind ecological, physical economic and social aspects of lands, waters and resources.
To put it simply, managing multiple resources sustainably.
Explain Assessment vs Monitoring
Assessment: Pre and or post activity survey or evaluation
- used for planning and to assess the outcome of a specific activity
- one time or maybe 2 if pre and post assessment
Monitoring: Repeated measures over longer time periods.
- Multiple sites and treatments
- Potential for adaptive management feedback
Give examples of assessments vs monitoring
Assessment: Stream and wetland classification, Wildlife or danger tree assessment, CMT survey, Ecosystem mapping, Invasive plant surveys etc.
Monitoring: Water quality and quantity monitoring, Fish and wildlife populations, Long term vegetation or forest structure plots, Sensitive ecosystem monitoring.
What is FREP?
Forest and range practices evaluation program. Intended to assess the effectiveness of FRPA.
