lecture 1 Flashcards
1
Q
Define sedative anxiolytics
A
- exert a calming effect or sedation with concomitant relief of anxiety at relatively low doses
- depressant effects on psychomotor and cognitive functions
2
Q
List selective depressants
A
- sedative hypnotics
–> benzodiazepines
–> barbiturates
–> Ethanol
3
Q
list non-selective/general depressants
A
- antihistamines
- Opioid analgesics
4
Q
define Hypnotics
A
- agents that produce droiness and encourage the onset and maintence of a state of sleep
- general hynotic effects
–> more rapid onset of sleep
–> increased duration of Stage 2 NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep
–> decreased druation of REM and stage 4 NREM sleep
5
Q
define anxiety
A
- overwhelming and continuous worrying about life events
- Symptoms
–> anxiousness, nerousness, apprehension, fear, panic, mental disinttegration
6
Q
list benzodiazepine sedative-hynpotics
A
- flurazepam
- temazepam
- triazolam
- midazolam
7
Q
list benzodiazepine anxiolytic
A
- alprazolam
- clorazepate
- diazepam
- lorazepam
- oxazepam
8
Q
list benzodiazepine like (Z-drugs)
A
- Zolpidem
- Zaleplon
- Eszopliclone
**sleep inducers**
9
Q
Describe sedative-hypnotics drugs
A
DEPRESSES CNS
- GRADED dose-dependent (sedation/sleep –> anesthesia/coma –> respriatory depression/death)
- Linear slope = barbiturates and alcohols
–> result in coma and death
- Non-linear slope = benzodiazepines and newer hypnotics
–> GENERALLY SAFER (reach plateau in CNS depression)
10
Q
list therapeutic uses of sedative hypnotics
A
- relief of anxiety
- relief of insomnia**
- Sedation and amnesia (balanced anesthesia)
- Tx of epilepsy and seizure states
- Control of ethanol or other sedative hypnotic wiehtdrawl states
